Railway workers at CN, CPKC vote to reauthorize strike
Union members at CN and CPKC railways have voted to reauthorize strikes at both companies if negotiated settlements can't be reached.

Teamsters Canada said in a statement Saturday that union members at both railways voted almost 99 per cent in favour of reauthorized strike action.

The union said members previously voted in favour of strike action on May 1, but the 60-day time limit on the vote expired.
It said that meant it had to take the "unusual step" of holding a second strike vote.

CPKC spokesman Terry Cunha said the company issued a statement Friday and would not be making further comments.

Consumers in Canada prioritize value and trust amid inflation concerns

Inflationary concerns continue to loom large in consumers’ minds.

PwC Canada’s 2024 Voice of the Consumer survey found that 44 per cent of respondents ranked inflation as the top threat facing the country, eclipsing economic volatility and health risks, despite the rise in the cost of living gradually slowing.

Other key findings include:

  • More than four in 10 (43 per cent) Canadian consumers would switch to a competing brand that offers better value for their money
  • Respondents ranked retail and consumer goods companies third for trustworthiness, behind healthcare, hospitality and leisure sectors
  • Despite the high cost of living, two-thirds will pay an above-average price for products that are locally produced, manufactured with a lower carbon footprint or have other sustainability characteristics
  • Canadian consumers will pay a sustainability premium of 6.9 per cent, compared to 9.7 per cent globally. One in five would pay a premium of 10 per cent or more.

Idle containership fleet dips to pandemic-era lows as carriers hunt tonnage
As global demand for box ship capacity continues to dramatically outstrip supply, the number of idled vessels is down to numbers not seen since the pandemic.

According to new Alphaliner data, in the first half of the year, commercially idle tonnage represented an average of 0.7% of the container shipping fleet, “harking back to levels seen during the pandemic,” it reported.

Stanley Smulders, director of marketing and commercial for ONE, said: “If you look at all the statistics, there are no ships idle. All the shipping lines are in need of ships at the moment.”

Unions seek immediate action to protect seafarers in the Red Sea
The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) and seafarers’ unions around the world are demanding immediate action to ensure the safety of seafarers in the Red Sea due to rising ship attacks.

”We demand immediate action to ensure the safety of seafarers in the Red Sea, action which, to date, has been lacking and which could have prevented the unnecessary deaths of seafarers,” the ITF said in a statement marking the IMO’s Day of the Seafarer.

The ITF calls for governments, shipping companies and flag states to coordinate efforts to protect seafarers, and not to rely solely on certain navies for protection. It’s also urging that ships be diverted to keep seafarers out of harm's way.

WestJet and unionized mechanics agree to resume talks
The threat of strike action by unionized mechanics at WestJet has been dropped after both sides agreed to return to the bargaining table.

A statement says the air carrier appeared before the Canadian Industrial Relations Board to discuss arbitration options with its Aircraft Maintenance Engineers and Tech Ops employees. CIRB officials say more information is needed from both sides before deciding whether arbitration is the best way to reach a first-time collective bargaining agreement.

In the meantime, the parties have jointly agreed to return to the bargaining table and continue working towards a resolution.
